During Volunteers’ Week we’re taking the time to shine a light on the volunteers who power the third sector across Aberdeen and the North-east.
Today we turn our attention to the volunteers behind Home-Start Aberdeen.
Eleanor McEwan, General Manager with Home-Start Aberdeen had this to say about their amazing volunteers;
"At Home-Start Aberdeen we truly couldn’t achieve what we do without our home visiting volunteers."
"A child’s early years really matter and we reach the family to reach the child. When a parent can’t cope with whatever life is throwing at them, their children will suffer. When a family asks us for help, it’s a volunteer who makes a difference. Our home visiting volunteers provide life changing emotional and practical support to families with young children in Aberdeen, helping them to deal with the challenges they face. They support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. They help parents to create a loving and nurturing home environment where children and can play and learn, grow and thrive and be safe and secure. Following Home-Start support over 90% of parents see significant improvements in their own and their children’s emotional and physical health and wellbeing. The majority of our volunteers are parents themselves. They recognise the challenges associated with raising a family and find it rewarding to help others who are facing these challenges."
“I love seeing parents becoming more confident, more able to deal with their problems and engage more with their children”
“I love being with the family, I get as much out of the visits as they do. I feel like their granny”
“I like the fact that Home-Start Aberdeen is local and I that I can give something back to another family in my own community”
Home-start Aberdeen volunteers work with the charity for an average of 5 hours a week equating to the equivalent of 13 full time paid members of staff every year– an amazing contribution by any standards!
